This article examines technology that allows corrections officials to regulate inmate telephone use.
Abstract
Most inmates have telephone privileges, and it is important that corrections officials be able to detect and prevent abuses such as phone fraud and harassing calls. BellSouth's MAX system provides around-the-clock technical support service and controls to help detect and prevent fraud and other criminal activity. Other features include: (1) Call Blocking; (2) Call Branding, which identifies the caller as an inmate at a corrections facility; (3) Called-Party Rate Quotes; (4) Called Number Alarm; (5) Personal Identification Number for each inmate; (6) restrictions on passing coded messages while allowing call recipients to decide whether to accept calls; (7) printouts to detect unusual patterns; (8) three-way call blocking and detection; and (9) three-way call detect enhancer. A variety of enhanced features are available to customize the system and increase user control.
