Conducted in June 1987 in all Australian states and territories, this census covered all adult persons serving noncustodial court orders including postprison orders such as parole and early release schemes and orders not involving terms of imprisonment such as probation, fines, and community service orders.
Abstract
Information collected in the census was of three basic types: general information on demographic and social characteristics of adults serving community-based orders; nature of offense; and type and severity of order being served. Most information was obtained from existing records. Information not on record was collected, where feasible, through individual interviews. The offender's date of birth was used to calculate the person's age at census date. Information was also obtained on aboriginality, state or country of birth, marital status, employment status, highest level of education, prior adult correctional experience, most serious offense, Federal offense, level of court originating order, duration of order, and time already served and remaining to serve. The number of persons serving orders not including imprisonment totaled 23,045 males and 5,193 females. Persons serving postprison orders involved 6,577 males and 451 females. Appendixes contain the data collection form and statistics on the total population by jurisdiction, sex, and age. 41 tables and 3 figures
