This report on the third annual Australian National Prison Census presents data on the characteristics, offenses, and sentences of persons (convicted and unconvicted) held in adult correctional institutions in Australian jurisdictions as of June 30, 1984.
Abstract
The report's first major section presents summary tables of inmate characteristics, offenses, and sentences, compared by jurisdiction and sex. Where appropriate, tables of percentages, rates per 100,000 relevant population, and graphic representations are included. The second major section contains tables of aggregated figures for all jurisdictions combined, showing offender characteristics and sentences by offense types. In the third major section, offenders' legal status, the sentence for the most serious offense, the aggregate sentence, and the actual expected sentence (time between admission date and earliest release date) are shown classified by most serious offense for each jurisdiction. These tables facilitate the interjurisdictional comparison of overall sentencing practices for the various offense types. The appendixes present the basic data collection form and the total inmate population as of June 30, 1983, by jurisdiction, age, and sex.
