This report summarizes the history of an award program established by Australia's government in 1991 to honor outstanding violence prevention and violence reduction projects and lists and describes the projects that received awards in 1993.
Abstract
Established in response to public concern that reached a peak following a random shooting massacre, the award includes a total prize pool of up to $100,000. Winning projects need only demonstrate that they have been successful in cost-effectively achieving the goal of the award. In 1993, 102 nominations were received from all Australian states and territories. Thirty-six addressed violence prevention among children and youth and included school-based programs. Other nominations focused on domestic assault, violence prevention in minority communities, personal security, and other forms of violence. The main award went to the Kullarri Patrol, a mobile unit based in Broome in the West Kimberly region. Operating on foot or from a vehicle both day and night, the patrol seeks to address potentially violent situations that may involve intoxicated Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. The patrol members are local Aboriginal people who bring their knowledge of family relationships and culturally appropriate interventions in conflict situations to assist with resolving problems. Other winners were a puppet theater, a park safety program, a high school program, and a program to improve inmates' coping skills. List and descriptions of 1992 winners
