This article outlines the benefits of computer telecommunications for police officers.
Abstract
TAPCIS, a shareware program available in the Tapcis Forum on CIS, is utilized for word-processing and for sending and receiving messages and mail. Other models allow the user to compose messages offline, such as CIS' Model 100 Special Interest Group. EMAIL8.100 is designed especially for handling electronic mail. SMART is an auto-program that handles forum sessions. The system logs the user onto his favorite forum, reads marked messages, and automatically logs off. It is noted that the Boise (Idaho) Police Department, a research-intensive organization, uses telecommunications to access NCJRS and Criminal Justice Periodicals Index. SAFETYNET has instituted a new public safety library, set aside for public domain or shareware programs; for study reports; and for files related to police administration, investigation, and law enforcement. The author notes that most of these systems are available through CompuServe.
