DESCIRPTIVE REPORT ON THE THREE-PHASE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS POLICE INFORMATION SYSTEM DESIGNED TO COLLECT AND DISSEMINATE INFORMATION ON FORGERIES AND OTHER RELATED CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES.
Abstract
THE FIRST PHASE OF THIS SYSTEM INVOLVED THE DEVELOPMENT OF A DAILY PRINTOUT WHICH WOULD COLLECT AND CORRELATE ALL INFORMATION APPEARING ON FORGERY AND RELATED CRIME REPORTS. THE SECOND PHASE WAS THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN ON-LINE SYSTEM WITH IMMEDIATE COMPUTER RESPONSE TO QUERIES ON FORGERY ACTIVITY. THE THIRD PHASE INVOLVED EXPANDING THE BENEFITS OF THE SYSTEM TO OTHER AREA CRIMINAL JUSTICE AGENCIES. THE LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT, AFTER IMPLEMENTING THIS SYSTEM, EXPERIENCED A 31 PERCENT INCREASE IN FORGERY ARRESTS FROM 1972 TO 1973, IN SPITE OF A SEVEN PER CENT DECREASE IN INVESTIGATIVE PERSONNEL. A COPY OF THE WORTHLESS DOCUMENT REPORT IS ATTACHED.
