Police agencies are increasingly using vehicle location monitors to replace radio communications in noting vehicles' location, availability, and other information.
Abstract
The equipment now available for the dispatching job ranges from simple systems that include automatic vehicle location monitoring, but still involve voice instructions issued by the dispatcher, to more sophisticated systems that include an on-board navigation system. These systems use either signal-dependent or autonomous methods to track vehicles. One potential problem with on-board navigation systems is that complex map displays can distract driver attention. To address this problem, system designers are trying easier displays that use graphic symbols. In addition, synthesized voice commands are often used to augment visual commands. In Detroit, an integrated system that includes automated vehicle location, the use of mobile display terminals in the vehicle, and computer-aided dispatch is being used. Photograph and illustration
