Automated police information systems are discussed.
Abstract
This article outlines the steps that police departments need to take to continue to take advantage of computerized records and information systems. It advises that continued support of city officials is critical and that a detailed needs assessment should be conducted by each police department to ensure that the computerized system addresses its particular requirements. Vendor's products then should be evaluated with guidance from the recently established Performance Measures Subcommittee of the IACP's Law Enforcement Information Management Section. Interoperability throughout the entire criminal justice system is stressed as vital to the success of any system. A system developed by OCS Technologies is described. Suggestions for choosing a software company are provided.
