The Western Australian College of Advanced Education has preservice teacher education courses which provide the neophyte teacher with the knowledge, understanding, skill, and experience to be an effective practitioner and hence a significant contributor to crime prevention in schools.
Abstract
The preservice teacher course is the 3-year diploma of teaching for secondary schools. The first 2 years of the course are each divided into two semesters, and in the middle of each semester, students engage in a 2-week teaching practice. In the third year, betweenthe first and second semesters, students have a 12-week teaching practice, referred to as the Assistant Teacher Program. The course provides the graduate teacher with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to ensure effective lesson planning and effective student learning. Inherent in achieving effective learning is the maintenance of order in both the classroom and the school in general. Properly structured practice experiences and appropriate monitoring of the student teacher's progress will help ensure that discipline problems and escalation to crime in schools will be minimized. 8 references.
