Abstract
The author provides information on how to appraise the chances of recovering stolen property, methods for safeguarding property, and steps potential victims can take to prevent burglaries. The book is organized into three basic sections. The tasks section covers the nature of the burglary problem and looks at perpetrators and their techniques and how burglars evade detection and apprehension. The tactics section focuses on the police response to burglary, including the first police officer on the scene, burglaries in progress, and the work of the burglary detail. This section provides information on processing the crime scene for clues, obtaining statements from victims and witnesses, and conducting followup. The tools section deals with specific items of equipment and their use in burglary investigations. Techniques of both amateur and professional burglars are described with respect to how they case targets, select victims, break into buildings, get past alarms and into safes, make their getaways, and fence stolen goods. Security equipment is discussed, as well as community crime reduction measures. Photographs and illustrations
