This manual presents reprints of four articles on the training of campus police and the outlines and time requirements of a sample inservice training program.
Abstract
An overview of innovative training programs focuses on the duration and content of training, based on a review of the literature and the author's personal experience. Among recommendations are the use of 40-hour training blocks rather than 2-hour biweekly classes, the establishment of a probationary period prior to basic training, and the provision of indepth basic training. Alternatives to traditional roll call training and one program using a multimedia approach to refresher training are discussed. An article on the Mid-Michigan Law Enforcement Center focuses on the cooperative efforts among area police departments and a community college that have produced the success of the training program. A Mississippi program to train law enforcement officers in departments with only 10 to 20 members is outlined. An examination of supervisory training notes the lack of attention to this area and gives guidelines for the development and implementation of a successful program. Also presented is an outline of a sample training program covering 13 subject areas, including the time allotted to each topic. References for some papers and a list of four additional information sources are provided.
