This research is two-fold in purpose; first, the research estimates a model of judicial discretion to impose financial conditions on pretrial release, and second, the study explores the presence of sample selection bias in model specification.
Abstract
To address the first concern, the author specifies a model of bail decision making that is informed by legislative enactments and Supreme Court decisions defining the legal function of bail in the United States and research findings of the determinants of bail outcome. To pursue the second concern, the author relies on Heckman's (1979, 1976) model of selection bias. 6 notes, 35 references. (Author abstract)
