SECONDARY STUDENTS MAY BE TAUGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF COMPARISON SHOPPING, AND THE DANGERS OF DECEPTIVE ADVERTISING IN THIS FILM FROM THE CONSUMER FRAUD SERIES.
Abstract
THROUGH A PORTRAYAL OF A TEENAGER ATTRACTED BY AN ADVERTISEMENT FOR AN UNDERPRICED TAPE DECK, THE FILM EXPLAINS WHY IT IS IMPORTANT FOR CONSUMERS TO DETERMINE THEIR SPECIFIC NEEDS AND NOT BE SWAYED BY UNBELIEVABLE CLAIMS AND PROMISES. PRODUCTS AND RETAIL COMPANIES SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED BEFORE PURCHASES ARE MADE, AND CONSUMERS SHOULD TAKE THEIR BUSINESS TO REPUTABLE MERCHANTS. FORMS OF 'TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE ADVERTISING' SHOULD BE IGNORED IN FAVOR OF STRAIGHTFORWARD INFORMATION CONCERNING THE QUALITY AND PRICE OF PRODUCTS. IF MISTAKES ARE MADE BY THE CONSUMER CONCERNING CREDIT AGREEMENTS OR SALES MADE WITHOUT COMPLETE DISCLOSURE OF FINANCING TERMS OR WARRANTIES, THEN ASSISTANCE SHOULD BE SOUGHT FROM THE MERCHANT OR FROM THE LOCAL CONSUMER AGENCY. FREQUENTLY ARRANGEMENTS WITH FINANCING CAN BE SETTLED AND CLARIFIED, OR PRODUCTS CAN BE RETURNED FOR REFUND. RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENTAL ACTIVITIES INCLUDE STUDENT ASSIGNMENTS AT COMPARISON SHOPPING, AND DISCUSSIONS OF THE QUALITIES OF GOOD SALESPERSONS AND GOOD CONSUMERS. NO REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED. (TWK)
