Abstract
Developed by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, the physical conditioning program is designed to enhance the physical fitness of police cadets. Program objectives are achieved by a three-step educational process: (1) cadets are introduced to goals and objectives of the physical conditioning program; (2) cadets participate in a series of conditioning exercises that systematically address the basic components of physical fitness (cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility); and (3) cadets receive classroom instruction in physical fitness as a lifetime pursuit, low back care, nutrition, weight management, substance abuse, and self-evaluation. In addition to assessment and physical conditioning components, the program includes a job-related physical ability test that each cadet must pass in order to demonstrate acceptable physical readiness to perform as a patrol officer. The physical conditioning program manual includes essential background information for instructors, specific program requirements, classroom instruction materials, recommended medical and routine/emergency first aid procedures, and the job-related test battery. Appendixes contain additional information on physical ability enhancement and testing.
