Intended for use in training California law enforcement personnel, this document presents an outline for California law enforcement trainers and criminal justice educators who are delivering performance-based law-enforcement training on the history of policing, concepts related to police professionalism, and issues related to police ethics.
Abstract
The curriculum traces the historical evolution of law enforcement and defines the traditional elements of a profession. It also defines values, principles, ethics, and moral standards related to law enforcement; discusses community expectations regarding the lawful and ethical behavior of police officers; and covers the benefits of professional and ethical behavior. It also presents and discusses the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics, the California Code of Professional Conduct and Responsibilities for Peace Officers, examples and potential ramifications of unethical or unprofessional conduct, the concept of intervention, and the prevention and correction of unethical behavior.
