These 30 papers present an overview and review of research findings on child abuse and neglect, in terms of their history, dynamics, contexts, causes, assessment, treatment, and prevention.
Abstract
The chapters are written by professionals from areas that include pediatrics, psychiatric, legal studies, and social work. The first five chapters provide a historical overview of child abuse and neglect, as well as background material on the cultural, psychiatric, social, economic, and legal contexts of child maltreatment. The next 14 chapters discuss the processes of assessing cases of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse and neglect from the perspectives of all the professionals involved, including teachers, pediatricians, psychiatrists, nurses, and social workers. The next seven chapters describe intervention and treatment, focusing on legal issues, investigative procedures, and treatment techniques. The final four chapters focus on prevention and policy issues, including a clinical and developmental approach to prevention and child protection policy.
