A directory of shelters for battered women includes those in the United States and abroad, and 12 articles discuss various factors in wife abuse and services to address the problem.
Abstract
The names, addresses, phone numbers, and general services are presented for the shelters and other services offered battered women. U.S. organizations are listed by State. Similar organizations for battered women in 28 other countries are also listed. Four articles on wife battering address the myths and realities of wife beating, the importance of refuges for battered women, the futility of trying to save a marriage where the husband is a wife batterer, and statistics that compare the incomes and health needs of women with those of men. Other articles consider the Abuse Prevention Act of Massachusetts, nonshelter services for battered women, support group information, and practical information on shelter procedures. The remaining articles consider sexist language, the medical community's failure to address the needs of battered women, agoraphobia as a symptom of battering, and services for batterers. An extensive list of U.S. and international publications and films on battered women is also provided.
