The "Be A Winner" program is an innovative drug education program which brings uniformed law enforcement officers into the elementary school classroom.
Abstract
The curriculum consists of an educator pre-session conducted by the school counselor or teacher, an officer pre-visit, eight sessions of officer led instruction, one additional educator session placed between lesson five and lesson six, and a graduation. The officer leads one-hour-per-day, one-day-per-week sessions on trust and communication, self-esteem, peer and media pressure, assertiveness, making good decisions, alcohol and tobacco, understanding drug use, and alternatives to drug use. The results of a subsequent questionnaire given to the students revealed that students participating in the program showed a greater increase in decision-making scores than students in the control group. The program did not significantly influence self-esteem or the students' concept of law enforcement officers. 2 tables and 7 references (Author abstract modified)
