This educational kit for the drug prevention program, "Race Against Drugs" (RAD), contains an action book, a facilitator's guide, a program video, a pin, and a poster.
Abstract
RAD is designed for fifth to seventh grade students. The activities link children's interest in motor vehicles and motor sports competition with drug abuse prevention. The materials are based on research that shows the most effective drug-prevention strategies promote overall health, self-esteem, and success. The facilitator's guide is designed to help teacher's take students through the "Action Book" possessed by each student. Beginning activities familiarize participants with motor sports in general. A sampling of motor sports terminology is also included. The second major section of information and activities focuses on general health, fitness, and safety. As the students appreciate the high level of physical and mental fitness required to be successful in motor sports, they focus on their own health and its importance for their performance in daily activities in school and in leisure time. The health theme is related to drug-prevention objectives, as students are led into the third major section of activities. These activities promote responsible decisionmaking and resistance skills. They focus on social problemsolving, decisionmaking, and resistance skills to help children develop an internal locus of control. This in turn builds the self-sufficiency and self-esteem children need to make informed choices about drug use. The final section of the Action Book contains information and activities that address peer selection and team building. A 5-minute video provides information on race car driving and the importance of team work, physical fitness, and mental alertness in race car driving. Various members of a race car team encourage children not to use drugs.
