This newsletter for emergency responders describes programs, resources, and activities pertinent to emergency management for disasters, notably WMD (weapons of mass destruction) incidents.
Abstract
The first section of the newsletter describes the training courses, along with their prerequisites, of the Federal Center for Domestic Preparedness. The mission of the Center is to operate a Federal training center to prepare emergency responders, emergency management, State, local, and Federal officials to respond to terrorist acts that involve WMD, as well as hazardous-materials incidents. The content, requirements, and prerequisites are provided for courses that focus on the WMD emergency responder, WMD hazardous materials technicians, and the WMD incident command. The newsletter next describes the State grant packages of the U.S. Justice Department's Office of Justice Programs (OJP). Grants will be used to enhance the capabilities of State and local units of government to respond to acts of terrorism that involve WMD. The newsletter next announces the new terrorism response training Internet website developed by the Science Applications International Corporation (www.click2learn.com). On this website, emergency responders can obtain training on medical responses to chemical and biological terrorism. Other resources described are an upcoming WMD conference (November 2000), resources provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the announcement of the online availability of the Center for Disease Control's report, "Preparedness and Response to Biological and Chemical Terrorism: A Strategic Plan." Information is also provided on NDPO (National Domestic Preparedness Office) newsgroups and Common Communication Link.
