ARTICLES ON AGENCIES INVOLVED IN DEFINING YOUTHFUL OFFENDERS AS DELINQUENT AND IN EFFECTING THEIR REHABILITATION THROUGH INSTITUTIONALIZATION OR PROBATION.
Abstract
MANY CRIMINOLOGISTS HAVE RECENTLY TURNED FROM THE STUDY OF CRIME CAUSATION TO INQUIRY INTO SOCIAL CONTROL AGENCIES AND THEIR EFFECTS UPON THE PERSONS THEY AID. ONE OF THE AUTHORS EXAMINES THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN DELINQUENTS AND CORRECTIONAL ORGANIZATIONS. HE FOCUSES ON THE WAYS THAT AN OFFENDER'S SELF-PERCEPTION CAN BE ALTERED BY THE OPINIONS AND ATTITUDES OF THOSE WHO DEAL WITH HIM. SEVERAL SELECTIONS EXPLORE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF YOUTHS WHO REMAIN AS HIDDEN DELINQUENTS AS OPPOSED TO THOSE WHO ARE DISCOVERED IN THEIR LAWBREAKING ACTS. THE TEXT THEN COVERS THE JUVENILE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM IN MUCH THE SAME WAY THAT THE OFFENDERS ARE PROCESSED THROUGH IT - STARTING WITH POLICE CONTACTS, CONTINUING TO THE JUVENILE COURT, THEN TO PROBATION, AND FINALLY THROUGH CONFINEMENT IN TRAINING SCHOOLS. THE LAST SECTION CONTAINS ESSAYS DEALING WITH PUBLIC ATTITUDES TOWARD THE JUVENILE COURT AND THE OPINIONS OF PROBATION OFFICERS AND POLICEMEN OF THE PROCEDURES FOR PROCESSING DELINQUENTS.
