This article presents modifications to the new 0101.06 NIJ standard on police body armor to increase the ballistic resistance.
Abstract
The new standard, "Ballistic Resistance of Body Armor NIJ Standard-0101.06," was released in July 2008. The new standard increases the ballistic resistance of certified armor and examines and confirms durable bullet-resistant materials that withstand various challenges; it carries harsher testing and advanced environmental conditioning to better protect officers. Ballistic vests that perform under the new NIJ standard are tested to be stronger, more resistant, and hold up better against atmospheric conditions and wear. The intent of the new standard is to prevent future injuries or deaths due to failing body armor, and to beef up ballistic resistance and endurance. There are several companies with body armor products that have been NIJ-tested and certified to the new 0101.06 standard.
