THIS SYMPOSIUM ISSUE PRESENTS FIVE ARTICLES WHICH DISCUSS THE DEFINITION AND NATURE OF BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION, REVIEW THE ISSUES INVOLVED IN BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION IN PRISONS, AND PRESENT EXAMPLES OF SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMS.
Abstract
IN THE FIRST ARTICLE, THE AUTHOR PROVIDES AN OVERVIEW OF THE FIELD OF BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION AND OFFERS INSIGHTS INTO THE LEGISLATOR'S PERSPECTIVE ON BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION PROGRAMS IN PRISONS. THE TECHNIQUES OF BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION ARE THEN REVIEWED AND THE VALIDITY OF EACH TECHNIQUE IS EVALUATED. A SURVEY OF SOME OF THE MORE IMPORTANT PROGRAMS IN OPERATION AND COMMENTS ON THE ETHICAL PROBLEMS RAISED BY THE DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES ARE ALSO INCLUDED. TWO BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION PROGRAMS IN OPERATION ARE DESCRIBED. FINALLY, AN ARTICLE IS PRESENTED WHICH PROVIDES A STEP-BY-STEP ANALYSIS OF THE AUTHOR'S SUIT AGAINST AN ILLINOIS BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION PROGRAM; MANY PROBLEMS PECULIAR TO BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION LITIGATION ARE HIGHLIGHTED. A BIBLIOGRAPHY ON BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION AND BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION IN PRISONS IS INCLUDED AS WELL.
