PRISONERS PLACED IN SOLITARY CONFINEMENT WERE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO EARN POINTS IN EXCHANGE FOR DESIRED PRIVILEGES WHICH THEY HAD LOST.
Abstract
SEGREGATED PRISONERS EARNED POINTS BY STANDING INSPECTIONS, PARTICIPATING IN A PHYSICAL TRAINING PROGRAM, ATTENDING COUNSELING SESSIONS, COMPLETING WORK PROJECTS, AND DISPLAYING APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR DURING EACH 24-HOUR PERIOD. EACH OF THESE ACTIVITIES WAS REWARDED WITH A SPECIFIC NUMBER OF POINTS. AT THE END OF A 24-HOUR PERIOD, THE POINTS WERE EXCHANGEABLE FOR A VARIETY OF REWARDS. ESSENTIALLY, THE INDIVIDUAL HAD EARNED HIS WAY INTO DISCIPLINARY SEGREGATION AS A RESULT OF HIS INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR AND ONLY THROUGH HIS APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR COULD HE BE REINSTATED INTO THE REGULAR INSTITUTIONAL PROGRAM, AND REGAIN HIS LOST PRIVILEGES.
