Staff subjectivity and inconsistency in administering rewards and punishments to offenders, plus a dearth of program evaluation, are major problems within the correctional system. This paper emphasizes the need for, and proposes a method of, behavioral and program monitoring in a residential center for juvenile delinquents.
Abstract
Utilizing the daily logs, the authors tapped an already existent source of data. The result was a simple, easy-to-use system with potential for yielding practical information for both treatment and administrative purposes. The authors believe that the process developed undermines the notion that residential monitoring systems need to be complicated and cumbersome, utilizing a great deal of staff time before they are useful.
