Using the personal accounts and comments of alcoholics and drug addicts in a drug treatment center, together with the perspectives of addiction counselors in the same center, this videotape focuses on the nature of addiction, the problems it causes in people's lives and family relationships, and the process of recovery.
Abstract
The narrators are mainly young adults, males and females, and predominantly white. The videotape is divided into seven sections. In the initial section, addicts comment on the problems their addiction has causes, and the program director notes that addiction has mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual impacts. Each section focuses on one aspect of addiction or treatment, including denial, the recognition and expression of intense feelings after the denial ends, the concept of codependency or obsession with another person's feelings and wants, the impacts of the family of origin, the concept of detachment, and the development of the ability to take responsibility for one's own well-being.
