This manual presents teachers, parents, and other caregivers with guidelines and activities that involve McGruff the Crime Dog and McGruff's nephew Scruff. The Purpose is to help children ages 4 and 5 years develop self-esteem, problem-solving, and decision-making skills to avoid becoming involved in violence and the use of alcohol or other drugs.
Abstract
The guidelines emphasize the need for drug prevention programs for young children. They also note the crucial roles of parents and other caregivers in helping young children develop a strong self-concept and skills needed to make good choices for the rest of their lives. Individual sections present an overview of the developmental stages of children ages 4-5 years and specific suggestions for talking with young children about drugs. The 19 exercises focus on group cooperation, conflict management, peer interaction, health and safety, and self-esteem. They include storytelling, singing, games, arts and crafts, and other activities. Each activity is describes with respect to its objectives, materials, steps, variations, and a suggested letter to send home to parents.
