Abstract
TABLES APPENDED SHOW A 11.4-PERCENT DROP IN INDICTABLE OFFENSES BETWEEN 1976 AND 1977. THE MAJOR PROBLEM FACING THE POLICE WAS A SERIES OF CIVIL DISTURBANCES IN EARLY DECEMBER 1977. THESE RIOTS CAUSED LARGE AMOUNTS OF PROPERTY DAMAGE AND THE RESERVE CONSTABULARY HAD TO BE CALLED IN TO ASSIST THE REGULAR POLICE FORCE. OTHER HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDED THE FORMATION OF A CRIME PREVENTION UNIT, THE PUBLICATION OF A COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER, AND AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF SWORN OFFICERS FROM 380 IN 1976 TO 386 IN 1977. THE WORK OF EACH BRANCH IS EXPLAINED, AND RELEVANT STATISTICS ARE PROVIDED. THE MARINE SECTION, WHICH IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SAFETY OF VESSELS IN COASTAL WATERS, IS DESCRIBED IN DETAIL. (GLR)
