RESULTS OF THE USE OF LOW-COST SILENT ALARM SYSTEMS INSTALLED IN 350 BUSINESS LOCATIONS IN CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA IN 1970.
Abstract
THE ALARM SYSTEMS, PROVIDED BY AN LEAA PROJECT GRANT, WERE INSTALLED WITH DIRECT LINES TO THE POLICE COMMUNICATIONS CENTER. BURGLARY STATISTICS WERE COMPARED BETWEEN EQUAL NUMBERS OF PREVIOUSLY BURGLARIZED BUSINESSES WITH AND WITHOUT THE ALARMS. THE CEDAR RAPIDS POLICE REPORT A 32 PERCENT CLEARANCE RATE OF BURGLARIES OF BUSINESSES PROTECTED BY THE SYSTEMS, WITH A 100 PER CENT CONVICTION RATE. IMPACT OF THE SYSTEMS IS REFLECTED IN THE CONTAINMENT OF NONRESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES IN A CITY OF INCREASING POPULATION WITH A GROWING NUMBER OF BUSINESSES. FOR ONE-YEAR AND TWO-YEAR OPERATIONAL REPORTS, RESPECTIVELY, SEE NCJ-001748 AND NCJ-002785.
