This film presents professional counselors' views and portrays discussions with rape victims about their traumatic stress and the historical lack of emotional support for them.
Abstract
Sexual assault is discussed in terms of violence, rather than as sexual activity between consenting adults. Interviewed victims describe and discuss their loss of self-esteem and self-respect and their feelings of guilt. The motivation of a rapist is explored by a professional hospital counselor who attempts to deflate some of the stereotypical myths concerning women's dress, behavior, or provocative aura. The 'macho' presentation of male characters in movies and advertising and the sexiness of violence is viewed as perpetuating traits of 'male idealism' which, when cannot be attained, often is manifested in aggressive attempts of sexual domination. Additional factual aspects of rape are also noted: (1) not all rapes are preventable, (2) false rape reports are uncommon, (3) marital rape can occur, and (4) many victims are acquainted with their abusers. In addition to rape, sexual assault occurs as child abuse. It is estimated that in 85 percent of the occurrences, the child knows the abuser. Child sexual abuse prevention and detection programs are aimed at differentiation between exploitive and nurturing touching. Also mentioned are rape awareness programs for vulnerable groups and a self-defense education program. A Seattle, Wash., rape relief center is described, and the need for emotional sensitivity in the criminal justice system is emphasized.
