During 1993, 137 crimes motivated by bias against another's race, religion, ethnicity, or sexual orientation were reported in Connecticut, a 52.2-percent increase over 1992.
Abstract
Crime motivated by racial bigotry accounted for 56.2 percent of bias crimes, while 2.9 percent appeared to target both racial and religious groups. Crimes motivated by religious bigotry accounted for 25.5 percent of bias crimes, with anti-Semitism motivating 29 of 35 religious bias crimes. Physical force or a dangerous weapon was used in 24.1 percent of bias crimes. Two training sessions were held in 1993 to help police officers determine whether a crime was motivated by bias, and these sessions may have affected the increased number of police departments submitting bias crime reports in 1993. Connecticut legislation relevant to bias crime is noted, and the Bias Crime Report used by Connecticut's Department of Public Safety is included. 6 tables
