This article describes the surplus-sharing program of the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC)-West, which donates surplus computer equipment to law enforcement and corrections agencies.
Abstract

The Harney County Sheriff’s Office (Oregon), which boasts a 22-bed jail and 6 corrections officers, needed 1 personal computer (PC) to assist them with inmate tracking and administrative functions. Unable to purchase the PC because of budgetary restrictions, the Sheriff’s Office turned to the NLECTC-West for help. The NLECTC-West was able to help by tapping technical partner, Aerospace Corporation, which periodically updates the computer equipment of its personnel, donating old equipment to NLECTC-West. Once the surplus equipment is cleaned and has the proper software installed, NLECTC-West ships it off to law enforcement agencies in need, along with a folder explaining the NLECTC system. More than 50 computers have been shared with law enforcement agencies through this surplus-sharing program. Contact information is provided.
