Abstract
Canada's first Criminal Code, promulgated in 1893, was one of the country's most significant legal instruments since it marked the first major departure of Canada from English legal traditions. The Criminal Code represented an attempt to make the law accessible and responsive to all Canadians. The Canada Evidence Act was enacted in 1893, along with the Criminal Code, and this act gave accused persons the right to be competent witnesses. The Criminal Code and the Canada Evidence Act formed the basis of Canadian criminal law. Documents compiled in the book illustrate the historical evolution of Canada's Criminal Code and criminal justice system. They include documents from the Department of Justice, correspondence, and the proceedings of debates in the House of Commons and the Senate.
