DESCRIPTION OF A PRE-RELEASE HOME IN STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, FOR MALE YOUTH PRISON TRAINEES, THE FUNCTION IT IS INTENDED TO PERFORM, HOW YOUNG MEN GET ADMITTED TO IT AND THE NATURE OF THEIR LIFE IN THE HOME.
Abstract
THE HOME IS OWNED BY THE SKYDDSVARNET VOLUNTARY WELFARE SOCIETY AND IS INTENDED TO BRIDGE THE DRASTIC TRANSITION FROM THE CLOSED AND ISOLATED WORLD OF THE INSTITUTION TO FREE SOCIETY. YOUTH PRISON INMATES MUST THEMSELVES APPLY FOR ADMISSION TO THE HOME. THE DECISION TO ADMIT OR NOT DEPENDS ON THE OPINIONS OF THE PRISON DIRECTOR OR SOCIAL WORKER AND THE SKYDDSVARNET SOCIETY. ALL TRAINEES ARE EXPECTED TO BE EMPLOYED OUTSIDE THE HOME, AND JOBS ARE OBTAINED FOR THEM. A RELAXED ATMOSPHERE AND FRATERNIZATION BETWEEN INMATES AND STAFF ARE ENCOURAGED. AN INMATE WHO DOES NOT LIVE UP TO WHAT IS REQUIRED IN THE WAY OF BEHAVIOR CAN BE SENT BACK TO YOUTH PRISON FROM THE HOME. INMATES ARE USUALLY BETWEEN 18 AND 21 YEARS OLD. --IN SWEDISH, WITH SUMMARY IN ENGLISH
