An architect or engineer consultant can be invaluable in helping solve a security problem that includes multiple complex subsystems or goes beyond security equipment to include building considerations.
Abstract
Factors to consider in selection include whether the firm has had experience with similar projects, the primary architect's or engineer's familiarity with the relevant requirements to coordinate effectively with the security manager and other consultants, and whether the main designers and project leaders are registered design professionals. Regardless of the project's size, the design team will approach the project in stages. The first stage is to determine what information is needed to proceed with the design, list the functional requirements, develop conceptual solutions, examine the feasibility of the solutions, and prepare a clear and complete report. Subsequent stages include preparing the preliminary design and drawings, preparing the final design, conducting the bidding and negotiation to select a contractor, and assisting during the start-up and training phases of operations.
