Comments by a 16-year-old charged with truancy (Cricket) and her probation officer (Bodo) are interspersed with contemporary songs in this 20-minute cassette tape that takes an inside look at the juvenile justice system.
Abstract
The tape follows the impact of the juvenile justice system of Cricket beginning with her court hearing on a truancy charge at the age of 16 to her 18th birthday party which is attended by Bodo's judge at her hearing, her probation officer, and friends. Subjects covered by the tape include the progress and purpose of shelters for runaways, the attitudes and work of a probation officer, and the importance of evaluating peer groups that may encourage a young person to continue delinquent behavior. The tape emphasizes the importance of Bodo's friendship to Cricket who, at age 16, was heavily involved with drugs and was pregnant. With Bodo's help, Cricket successfully changes her life, including her old set of friends, and participates in work, junior college, group therapy, and a drug rehabilitative center. She continues her counseling sessions and tentatively plans to do counseling work with families.
