COMPONENTS, CHARACTERISTICS, CONSTRUCTION, AND APPLICATIONS OF EXPLOSIVE DEVICES ARE DESCRIBED FOR SECURITY PERSONNEL, AND SAFETY PROCEDURES IN CASE OF BOMB THREATS AND EXPLOSIVE USE ARE OUTLINED.
Abstract
IN THE CASE OF A BOMB THREAT, THE INDIVIDUAL RECEIVING THE TELEPHONE WARNING SHOULD ATTEMPT TO ACCURATELY ANALYZE THE WARNING AND THE CALLER. A BOMB CHECKLIST CAN BE DEVELOPED AND USED FOR THIS PURPOSE. SEARCH PERSONNEL SHOULD UNDERGO SYSTEMATIC TRAINING FOR BOMB SEARCHING. THEY SHOULD BE KEPT UNDER SUPERVISORY CONTROL DURING THE SEARCH AND SHOULD NOT HANDLE OR ATTEMPT TO DISENGAGE ANY SUSPICIOUS OBJECT. A SEARCH SHOULD BE MADE FOR MULTIPLE DEVICES IF ONE SUSPICIOUS DEVICE IS LOCATED. A COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF SUCH ELEMENTS AS FUSE TYPES, BLASTING CAPS, BLACK POWDER, DYNAMITE, TRINITROTOLUENE, THE PLASTIC EXPLOSIVE C-4, DETONATING CORD, AND INCENDIARY DEVICES (E.G., GASOLINE AND PIPE BOMBS) IS PRESENTED. TRIGGERING DEVICES ARE ALSO DISCUSSED INCLUDING THE TILT SWITCH, PRESSURE RELEASE, AND SOLENOID. VARIATIONS OF COMPONENTS AND PACKAGING OF INCENDIARY DEVICES ARE CONSIDERED. THE MOST COMMON BOMB USED BY TERRORIST GROUPS AND INDIVIDUALS IS THE PIPE BOMB COMPOSED OF A CLOCK, A BATTERY, A BLASTING CAP, AND DYNAMITE. SECURITY PROCEDURES ARE EMPHASIZED IN THE FILM AND THE EFFECTS OF THE VARIOUS EXPLOSIVES ON BUILDINGS AND AUTOMOBILES ARE DEPICTED. OFFICERS ARE WARNED TO VARY THEIR DAILY BEHAVIOR PATTERNS TO DISCOURAGE POTENTIAL RISKS OF BEING VICTIMIZED BY A BOMBER. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED--DAG)
