Data collected by about 6,000 agencies across the Nation and in the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico which were reported to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) field offices during the calendar year 1976 are summarized.
Abstract
The incidents tabulated in this report are generally described as the felonious detonations of explosive or incendiary devices, regardless of what Federal, State, or local laws are violated by the acts. Threats, hoaxes, accidents, or misdemeanor violations such as the illegal use of fireworks were not reported. The total number of incidents declined 24 percent from 2,074 in 1975 to 1,570 in 1976. Residents bombings formed the largest category (25 percent). About 30 percent of the bombings occurred in the Western States, the largest number for any region. Large cities were the most common bombing site. Bombing incidents directed toward individuals was the only category to increase -- up 91 percent from 1975. Deaths and injuries from bombing incidents were higher than any previous year except 1975. Property damage for the year exceeded 11 million dollars. Six charts, nine tables, and a State-by-State narrative of major incidents are included.
