TABULAR AND GRAPHICAL PRESENTATIONS OF DATA RELATING TO ACTUAL AND ATTEMPTED BOMBINGS IN 1977 ARE COMPILED.
Abstract
ANY ILLEGAL DETONATION OF AN EXPLOSIVE OR INCENDIARY DEVICE CONSTITUTING A VIOLATION OF LOCAL, STATE, OR FEDERAL LAW IS BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE FBI WHOSE FIELD OFFICES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR SUBMITTING INFORMATION ON ANY BOMBING WITHIN THEIR JURISDICTIONS COVERING THE UNITED STATES, THE VIRGIN ISLANDS, AND PUERTO RICO. ALL FIELD OFFICE REPORTS ARE FORWARDED TO THE UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING PROGRAM WHERE PERTINENT DATA ON BOMBING INCIDENTS ARE TABULATED. THE 1,318 REPORTED BOMBING INCIDENTS IN 1977 REPRESENTED A 16-PERCENT DECREASE OVER 1976. THE NUMBER OF EXPLOSIVE AND INCENDIARY BOMBINGS DECLINED SLIGHTLY FROM 1976 TO 1977, WHILE THE NUMBER OF ACTUAL AND ATTEMPTED FIRE BOMBINGS DECREASED MARKEDLY. TOTAL EXPLOSIVE INCIDENTS WERE DOWN BY 5 PERCENT; ATTEMPTS TO DETONATE EXPLOSIVE DEVICES ACCOUNTED FOR THE DECREASE FROM 188 IN 1976 TO 118 IN 1977. ABOUT 20 PERCENT OF ALL BOMBING ATTACKS IN 1977 WERE DIRECTED AT RESIDENCES. THE GREATEST VOLUME OF ATTACKS WERE RECORDED IN MAY. TOTAL CASUALTIES (DEATHS OR INJURIES) WERE DOWN IN 1977 FROM PREVIOUS YEARS. DETAILED DATA ARE PROVIDED, ALONG WITH SUMMARIES OF SELECTED BOMBING INCIDENTS BY MONTH AND STATE. (DEP)
