Abstract
The first chapter discusses explosive and bomb disposal services and training. Topics include tactical plans, organization, personnel selection, available technical assistance, and training sources. The second chapter focuses on bomb "transporters," which are used for the safe transport of a bomb from the location where it was found to a location where it can be stored, deactivated, dismantled, or exploded. In addition to discussing the purpose of a transporter, this chapter describes types of transporters. A chapter on equipment indicates minimum equipment needs, outlines the features of bomb disposal equipment, describes bomb-detection and bomb-search equipment, and lists expendable equipment items. The next chapter discusses the definitions and characteristics of explosives, including types of explosions, parts of an explosive, what causes explosives and bombs to detonate, variations in bombs, incendiaries, and courtroom testimony by bomb experts. A chapter on explosives and bomb laws considers the purpose of such legislation and regulations that govern the use of explosives, followed by a chapter on bomb search procedures that addresses evacuation and search procedures, a command post, communications, training, bomb drills, bomb security, and investigation procedures. A chapter on bomb-disposal procedures considers use of the media, the development of civilian bomb squads, the duties of the first officer on the scene, bomb squad notification, arrival, assistance, disposal methods, and destruction methods. The remaining four chapters focus on the search for and disposal of bombs in motor vehicles, the characteristics and management of commercial explosives and military ordnance, evidence of explosives, and principles of bomb protection. Checklists, case histories, 245 illustrative photographs, and a subject index
