A STUDY OF CASE-PROCESSING ACTIVITIES IN THE COURTS OF THREE IDAHO COUNTIES, UNDERTAKEN BY THE STATE PLANNING COMMISSION TO OBTAIN INFORMATION ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM PERFORMANCE, IS DOCUMENTED.
Abstract
THE STUDY WAS DESIGNED TO GATHER DATA ON THE NUMBER OF FELONY PROSECUTIONS BEGUN IN THE DISTRICT COURTS, THE NUMBER OF CONVICTIONS OBTAINED, AND THE NUMBER OF DEFENDANTS RECEIVING SENTENCES INVOLVING CONFINEMENT, PROBATION, OR OTHER NONINSTITUTIONAL ALTERNATIVES. THE 1975 DISTRICT COURT DOCKETS FROM BONNEVILLE, NEZ PERCE, AND CANYON COUNTIES WERE REVIEWED. FULL DATA ON CASE PROCESSING WAS NOT AVAILABLE FROM ANY OF THE DOCKETS. NEZ PERCE COUNTY'S DOCKET INCLUDED ONLY CASE NUMBERS, NAMES, AND THE DATES ON WHICH COMPLAINTS WERE FILED. IT WAS NECESARY TO REVIEW ALL FELONY CASE FILES INDIVIDUALLY TO OBTAIN THE DESIRED INFORMATION. BONNEVILLE COUNTY HAD NO INFORMATION ON SENTENCES, PRESENTENCE INVESTIGATIONS, AND (IN SOME INSTANCES) CHARGES FILED. NO INFORMATION WAS AVAILABLE ON FINAL DISPOSITIONS. INFORMATION RELATED TO PROCESSING PERIODS WAS NOT CONSIDERED TO BE RELIABLE. THE STUDY REVEALED THAT 139 FELONY CASES WERE PROCESSED IN BONNEVILLE COUNTY IN 1975, 208 IN CANYON COUNTY, AND 73 IN NEZ PERCE COUNTY. TABLES PRESENT COUNTY-BY-COUNTY BREAKDOWNS OF THESE CASES BY DISMISSALS, CASES PENDING, CASES REMANDED TO MAGISTRATE COURT, ACQUITTALS, TRANSFERS, GUILTY PLEAS/VERDICTS, AND NUMBER OF DAYS FROM FILING OF THE COMPLAINT TO DISPOSITION.
