This article presents the challenges facing the group chosen to implement the Secure Border Initiative network.
Abstract
There are many challenges that must be tackled as part of the Secure Border Initiative to improve border security. First, the Department of Homeland Security audit found flaws in the security for the Radio Frequency Identification System (RFIS) used at border crossings. Second, the northern border of the United States must be strengthened due to al-Qaida terrorists. Third, the United States border stretching from New York to Maine is one of two Federal Government pilot sites for the Secure Border. Fourth, there are concerns of vulnerability of the United States agriculture to agroterrorism (the deliberate introduction of animal and plant diseases). Fifth, there is a balancing act in the need to protect and secure the border and the need to protect commerce. The Secure Border Initiative is the development and implementation of a more tactical infrastructure in addition to border patrol officers and National Guard troops, such as fences, vehicle barriers, and roads. The above are the challenges facing the group chosen to implement the initiative.
