HISTORICAL ACCOUNT OF THE SYSTEM WITH PRINCIPAL EMPHASIS ON THE BORSTAL, BUT ALSO INCLUDING A DESCRIPTION OF SAINT PATRICK'S INSTITUTION WHICH EFFECTIVELY REPLACED THE BORSTAL IN THE IRISH REPUBLIC FROM 1956.
Abstract
EARLY CHAPTERS SET FORTH THE BACKGROUND TO THE BORSTAL SYSTEM, ITS ESTABLISHMENT IN IRELAND BEFORE PARTITION, AND ITS LATER FORTUNES IN BOTH NORTHERN IRELAND AND THE IRISH REPUBLIC. SEPARATE CHAPTERS DEAL WITH YOUNG WOMEN OFFENDERS AND PROVISION FOR YOUNG MALE ADULTS INSIDE THE TRADITIONAL PRISON. ASPECTS OF DAY-TO-DAY LIFE WITHIN THE INSTITUTIONS ARE EXAMINED, AND THE AUTHOR GIVES SPECIAL CONSIDERATION TO THE LINKS OF THE INSTITUTIONS WITH THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE AND THE DIFFICULTY OF ASSESSING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE BORSTALS OR EQUIVALENT CUSTODIAL SYSTEMS. A FINAL CHAPTER CONTRASTS ADMINISTRATIVE PRACTICE AND EXPERIENCE IN THE REPUBLIC AND NORTHERN IRELAND.
