This volume details the Federal government's 1988 prosecution of the Lucchese crime family in New Jersey and the circumstances surrounding the jury's rapid acquittal of the defendants.
Abstract
The narrative is based on dozens of interviews with sources on both sides of the case, as well as a review of thousands of pages of official documents, investigative reports, and trial transcripts. The Federal authorities conducted a 10-year investigation that resulted in a 65-page indictment and a 2-year trial that cost millions of dollars. However, the jury required less than 2 days to render its verdict of not guilty. Individuals described in terms of their involvement in the proceedings include career criminal Jackie DiNorscio, who represented himself; another defendant, Anthony Accetturo, who once avoided prosecution by claiming to have Alzheimer's disease; a prosecuting attorney, Vincent O'Malley, who had never lost a case until this one; and the leading defense attorney, Michael Critchley.
