Abstract
The discussion of the general stages of reaction to stress encompass the alarm reaction, resistance, and exhaustion. Early warning signs of stress and four levels of dysfunctioning under stress are described. The Glazer Stress Test is included to facilitate a self-evaluation of stress levels. A discussion of police methods for resolving violent incidents, particularly domestic assault cases, describes methods for establishing authority, calming techniques, and the use of professional objectivity and guidance. A review of the nature and causes of violence includes a profiling of the violent personality. Sources of stress in police marriages are examined in detail, and techniques for establishing and maintaining a healthy marriage are described. The concluding discussion covers techniques for eliminating destructive behaviors and managing stress. Appendixes contain instruments for evaluating stress as well as an 87-item bibliography.
