ADVICE ON PRISON CONDITIONS, PROGRAMS, PROBLEMS LIKELY TO BE ENCOUNTERED BY VOLUNTEERS, AND TASKS THAT VOLUNTEERS CAN PERFORM OUTSIDE OF PRISONS.
Abstract
SOME PRISON STATISTICS, A DISCUSSION OF THE NATURE OF THE TOTAL INSTITUTION, AND SECURITY PROBLEMS AND THEIR EFFECTS ARE FIRST DISCUSSED. EDUCATIONAL, VOCATIONAL, AND RECREATIONAL PROGRAMS THAT MAY UTILIZE VOLUNTEERS ARE DESCRIBED. QUALIFICATIONS OF PRISON VOLUNTEERS, AVENUES OF ENTRANCE, THE PRISONS THAT MAY HAVE PROGRAMS, RESTRICTIONS ON WOMEN VOLUNTEERS, AND WAYS TO START PRISON PROGRAMS ARE ALSO EXPLORED. ADVICE IS PROVIDED ON HOW TO AVOID BEING CONNED, HOW TO GET ALONG WITH PRISON OFFICERS, AND THE NECESSITY FOR REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS. THE SPECIAL PROBLEMS OF FEMALE INMATES AND OF INSTITUTIONALIZED JUVENILE OFFENDERS ARE CONSIDERED AS WELL. SUGGESTIONS ARE PROVIDED ON VOLUNTEERS IN THE COURTS AND PREVENTION ACTIVITIES FOR VOLUNTEERS. A LISTING OF ORGANIZATIONS THAT CAN HELP THE VOLUNTEER AND A GLOSSARY OF PRISON SLANG ARE ALSO INCLUDED.
