This chapter provides a brief history of terrorism with historical underpinnings of the issues resulting in terrorism throughout the world.

Abstract

In this chapter human violence was examined and how it came to be incorporated into terrorism today. It examined the evolution of humankind into the behavior now defined as terrorism. Understanding terrorism requires learning something about the history of terrorist groups, individual terrorists, and the conditions that spawned them. This brief history of terrorism included discussions on: the relationship between violence and terrorism; the state of terrorism; the cyclical nature of terror; the Ku Klux Klan in America; and contemporary events of terrorism. In summation, the longer the history of terrorism grows, the harder it is to make a label of terrorism stick to the actions of any group or nation. 17 endnotes
