CRIME STATISTICS ARE DISCUSSED IN RELATION TO POLICE AND CITIZEN CRIME REPORTING, POLICE RESPONSIBILITIES, AND THE SPECIFIC CRIMES OF HOMICIDE, AGGRAVATED ASSAULT, FORCIBLE RAPE, BURGLARY, ROBBERY, LARCENY, AND AUTO THEFT.
Abstract
CRIME STATISTICS ARE CRITICIZED FOR BEING UNREPRESENTATIVE OF THE ACTUAL OCCURRENCE OF CRIME. POLICE RESPONSIBILITY FOR CRIME IS LIKENED TO A DOCTOR'S RESPONSIBILITY FOR ILLNESS; WHILE NOT DISCLAIMING POLICE RESPONSIBILITY, THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS THAT IT NEEDS TO BE REDEFINED. THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN ANTI-CRIME UNIT IN BOSTON IS DISCUSSED THAT WILL BE PATTERNED AFTER NEW YORK'S, WHICH UTILIZES UNDERCOVER AGENTS IN IMAGINATIVE DISGUISES.
