Heroin addiction in India is examined in terms of its cultural and socioeconomic context and methods of identifying and rehabilitating heroin addicts.
Abstract
The discussion notes that India's current problems with heroin addiction resulted from political developments that caused drug traffickers to regard India as a transit zone through which to bring heroin to Western nations. It also emphasizes that government actions cannot solve the problem of heroin addiction and that efforts by citizens and voluntary social agencies are necessary. Further sections describe the extent of heroin use in India, the ways in which the mass media have made drug use attactive, the signs of an individual addicted to heroin, and treatment and prevention approaches. Characteristics of other commonly abused drugs, photographs, diagrams, appended map and flow chart, and 29 references
