THIS STATISTICAL AND NARRATIVE REPORT DETAILS THE ACTIVITIES OF THE BUFFALO, NEW YORK, POLICE DEPARTMENT FOR THE YEAR 1977.
Abstract
DATA INCLUDED ARE A FINANCIAL STATEMENT, THE VALUE OF FOUND AND RETURNED PROPERTY, A SALARY SCALE BY JOB TITLE, TABLES OF PERSONNEL STRENGTH FOR BOTH SWORN AND CIVILIAN PERSONNEL, AND A DETAILED ANALYSIS OF CALLS FOR SERVICE. AN ANALYSIS OF INDEX CRIMES BY PRECINCT IS GIVEN, BASED ON THE DEPARTMENT'S COMPUTERIZED INFORMATION SYSTEM. A CENTRAL BOOKING BUREAU AND A COMMUNITY YOUTH OFFICER PROGRAM WERE INAUGURATED DURING THE YEAR. THE CENTRALIZED BOOKING PROGRAM HAS HELPED ASSURE SUSPECTS OF THEIR RIGHTS AND HAS OVERCOME MANY OF THE PROBLEMS WHICH AROSE WHEN EACH PRECINCT KEPT ITS OWN RECORDS WITH LIMITED ACCESS TO THE INFORMATION ABOUT ARRESTS IN OTHER PRECINCTS. THE YOUTH OFFICER PROGRAM HAS BEEN WELL ACCEPTED AND IS PROVING TO BE A GOOD COMMUNITY CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAM. TABULAR DATA, GRAPHS, AND PHOTOGRAPHS ILLUSTRATE THE REPORT. (GLR)
